The Five Key Buttons

In this video, I'll guide you through FL Studio in five simple steps. These are the five buttons that can navigate around the DAW:

  • Playlist: This is where we arrange the puzzle pieces.
  • Piano Roll: This is where we edit individual mini-notes or the melodies for specific instruments.
  • Channel Rack: This is where we import drum sounds and sequence them to make beats.
  • Mixer: This is where you can add effects to your sounds, like reverb or EQ.
  • Browser: The browser is where you drag and drop your sounds into FL Studio.

If you ever get stuck in FL Studio, these five buttons can help you return to the window that you might have lost.

Importing Sounds and Folders

Let's import some sounds! Go to Options, then File Settings, and click on the extra search folder. Find where your sounds are located on your computer and click to add them.

Now, when you go to the browser and hit the refresh button, you will see your folder. You can navigate through different drum packs and preview various sounds.

For more sounds, you can join the Busy Works Beats Discord to access free drum kits and more!

Working with Plugins and MIDI Devices

If you want to add plugins to FL Studio, go to Options and then Manage Plugins. Use the scan options to find installed plugins. If you’re using a MIDI device, go to MIDI Settings to connect it.

Using the Piano Roll and Channel Rack

In the Channel Rack, you can load plugins. Right-click and replace the blank sampler with a plugin like FL Keys. To add notes, go to the Piano Roll, where you can draw in the notes and listen to the sounds.

To stay on beat, use the metronome, and adjust the grid to match the timing of your melody. You can also add effects, like reverb, by sending the sound to the mixer and applying plugins like Fruity Reverb.

Recording and Arranging Your Song

To record, go to Options and select your microphone. Set the buffer length to reduce latency. In the mixer, select a blank channel, assign your mic input, and add effects like EQ or noise gates.

Once you're set up, you can record audio directly into the playlist. Afterward, you can arrange your audio clips by slicing, cloning, or adjusting them in the playlist.

Exporting Your Song

Once you're happy with your project, you can save it by going to File and Save As. If you want to export your song, choose between a WAV or MP3 format, depending on the file size and quality you're looking for.
